Stop and think for a second what we mean when we say someone is ‘grasping at straws.’ It’s from the writings of Thomas More in 1534. He infers a person who is drowning will grab at anything, even at straws.
That person who has a million excuses as to why you deserved the horrible thing they did…you know: the person who got caught red-handed and somehow has managed to twist everything around to make it seem like you’re really at fault?
That person jumped out of your boat and they’re blaming you for the lack of boat where they landed.
